Saturday Code, supported by CodeDay.org
Limited Capacity seats available

Saturday Code is a collaboration with CodeDay.org.  It will be a fun, day-long coding event where students (12 - 18 years) will gather to build cool things together -- and learn to code... or learn to code better! Everyone will have the opportunity to pitch ideas, form teams, and build a cool app or game in less than 12 hours!  This is not a traditional hackathon or competition; it's all about learning and having fun.

No prior coding experience is required! Part of the fun is learning how to program while working with other people. We'll also provide some great workshops that you can attend. Or you can always just hang out, have fun and learn by watching! There will be coding coaches and maker mentors on site to help everyone make progress in their coding skills.

Bring your laptop and mouse (desktop PCs and monitors are also allowed). Food is included in your ticket.

This will be an official Lemonade Day event in which kids learn all about how to design, develop and opperate a successful, profitable lemonade stand.  There will be a limit of about 12 kids for the program.  There will be a Sunday 'curriculum' day for four hours at Makers Space plus the kids will actually setup and operate their lemonade stand for a day at one of the various Startup Week venues through out the week.  The actual venues and dates will be arranged per each lemonade stand team.

This is a great opportunity for youngsters to learn real lessons of entrepreneurship through the fun exercise of building a lemonade stand. They will take these lessons with them into many future (ad)ventures in their lives.  You can learn more about the Lemonade Day non-profit and their programs at http://lemonadeday.org

What happens when a neighborhood like Pioneer Square or South Like Union turns into a thriving center for tech?

How, exactly, does that happen? Knowing that we are growing, what kind of community do we want to become? And frankly, what does technology and innovation have to do with making Seattle a great place to live and work for everyone—healthy, inclusive, creative, productive, and affordable? Are Seattle's cranes going to truly foster a better—not just bigger—Seattle? Join us to explore what changes to the built environment mean for the future of innovation in our city.

On Monday, October 26th, we will explore the role of the Innovation District model–urban areas that are easily accessible by transit, technologically plugged-in, and populated by public institutions, startups, and other innovators–in shaping Seattle's future. This event is getting a lot of attention from Seattle's startup crowd already, making it a great opportunity to network over (hosted) food and drinks with some of Seattle's future business leaders. But the conversations won't be complete without you there in attendance.

As suburban office parks fall out of favor, more and more of these collaborative innovation clusters are appearing all over the globe. Major hubs like London, Boston, New York, and San Francisco have led the way, and Barcelona, Detroit, and even Seattle are making names for themselves with exciting examples as well. These significant, rapid changes to the built environment generate positive results for economic growth but mixed results for communities, leading to combative, sometimes violent, responses from those left behind.

Moderated by the founding director of Urban@UW, Thaisa Way, our panel of top thinkers and innovators will explore how Seattle can forge a new, more inclusive approach to urban innovation that empowers startups, established companies, and residents alike. Join us on Monday, October 26th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Galvanize, the newest incubator in Pioneer Square.

Coding with your siblings in python, aka #BloodIsThickerThanUnitTesting

In this talk, Joel and Wendy will discuss data-driven approaches to age-old sibling rivalry issues, such as:
  • Using data to understand who is really the favorite
  • Analyzing and visualizing the flight paths of stuffed animals on ceiling fans

About the speakers:

Joel and Wendy Grus grew up in suburban Atlanta where they learned Turbo Pascal from Coach Edgar in high school computer science. From there they each took different paths but both ended up in the Seattle Python community. Joel has been a data scientist at a few area startups, has written the O’Reilly book ‘Data Science from Scratch’, and is currently a software engineer at Google. Wendy is the co-organizer of Seattle PyLadies, has taught Intro to Python for Seattle GDI, and is currently a data analyst at INRIX.

Bacon Marketing: Creative tactics that will get your brand noticed on a shoe string budget
Bacon is popular (duh). What if you could harness the smokey and salty power of bacon for your own marketing efforts? Does that mean you give away bacon in deli paper with your logo on it?  Maybe it does!  If it draws the right kind of attention to your brand, it might be just the ticket. Take your uninspired marketing to the next level with creative tactics that will help you stand out in a field of competitors.

In this session, you'll get:
  • Actual examples of creative marketing efforts that have drawn attention on the cheap.
  • A few ways to get the most out of your creative marketing efforts (landing pages, measurement, etc).
  • A working session where you share your initiative and we'll brainstorm some ideas with the group!

“Follow the Money” - Understanding the Healthcare Industry Ecosystem
Healthcare business models are particularly challenging to distinguish between customers, buyers, and the users.   Many claim we are moving away from our business as usual “fee for service” to value based reimbursement. What does this mean for digital health, biotech and device entrepreneurs and what is the timing for this change?   Who pays for any solutions in healthcare?  Where can you be successful?

This session will start with a discussion of healthcare customers: insurance companies, hospitals, doctors, patients, and consumers.  We will focus on the unique challenges that each  present.   What defines winning for each player?  And what does each player need to do to win.

We will propose various approaches to help your business models succeed by drawing on our own healthcare startup and corporate experiences

Good for business & the world: Building diversity into your startup

Data shows that having a diverse* team is good for both business and social equity.  Yet, it’s something that very rarely just happens.  Our unintentional default, in fact, tends to be to surround ourselves with people just like us—to stick to our social circles.

Entrepreneurs have the unique opportunity to intentionally design their business foundation and culture to be welcoming and attractive to many types of people. This panel will discuss strategic ways to build inclusion into your new venture, from defining core values to hiring staff.  Join us – and let’s think outside of the circle.

*our definition of diversity is broad, covering such areas as ethnicity, gender, LGBTQ, age, background, socioeconomic status, and more.

React & Meteor Together: Reactive Meteor Development with React components

Meteor is an isomorphic JS platform built on Node.js. Meteor 1.2 officially supports React (in addition to Angular and Blaze). In this session we will hear from both React and Meteor developers who have used the technologies together. In this session, this is what you will hear about:

* For React Devs: Experience the ease and speed of developing on the Meteor platform with React. Find out the benefits of using Meteor's reactive programming paradigm and data-on-a-wire approach, and see how easy it is to get your backend data into your components, and have them automatically re-render when DB data changes. Enjoy Meteor's Isopack build system and leave grunt and gulp behind.

* For Meteor Devs: React is a wonder of componentization and separation of concerns. Feel what it's like to have all of the JS, HTML and even CSS that has to do with a particular component in one JSX file. Contrast the traditional Blaze template approach with creating a hierarchy of React components, and see how to convert from Blaze to React.

Overview

Fundraising for a new venture is never easy. Particularly for first-time entrepreneurs, the process can take months, and the randomness and ups & downs can be draining. But experienced fundraisers will tell you that effective fundraising shouldn't feel random at all: in fact, it's 80% planning and 20% execution. Fundraising workshops typically focus on that 20% (how to reach out to investors, how to pitch, etc.); this session will instead focus onhow to put together an effective fundraising strategy: deciding how much to raise, who to raise from, and why. We'll hear from two seasoned veteran entrepreneurs & investors who have just closed funding rounds on their individual approaches and advice for early-stage entrepreneurs.

Agenda

  • 12:00 - 12:30 - Networking & lunch
  • 12:30 - 1:30 - Speaking & Q&A
  • 1:30 - 2:00 - Networking & close

The Side Hustle: How to find 'spare' time to build your dream
In collaboration with Makers Coworking and Start Up Week, join founder of CRAVE, Melody Biringer, for a free fireside chat with Ellen Tailor.

What's a 'side hustle'?

It's your dream. It's the thing that (at least in the beginning) entrepreneurs, artists and leaders have to find the time to build in their 'spare' time. Side hustles take a lot of motivation, trust and self belief. You do have it in you. You just need the tools to make it happen.

That's what this fireside chat is about.

How do you organize your life to make time for your dream? How do you start building something that started in your imagination?
How do you make it past the initial enthusiasm to get through the doubt? How do you connect with others who can help?

We'll be talking about this and much more. We hope you'll join us.

The Big Flat Lie: Why a flat organizational structure invariably leads to mediocrity and failure
Limited Capacity seats available

Many of us dream of dumping abusive corporate hierarchies in favor of a more humane organization that is creative, efficient, and egalitarian. But flattening your org chart doesn't remove politics and create empowered individuals, it adds politics and creates ineffective-committee hell. I will remind you that you have already solved this problem in your everyday life, and that your everyday answer might save your company from mediocrity and failure.

Grit and Resilience: What You Need to Scale Up

There is a darkness out there for some entrepreneurs and most people just refuse to talk about it. At this event you’ll hear about how some have survived through it.

Building a Board That Works
Boards are a legal requirement and can be an albatross for both for-profit and nonprofit companies.  But Boards should be a resource of ideas, of energy and drive for the mission of the business.

Participants will learn about:
  • How to build a Board that has an effective composition.
  • How to recruit Board members who will engage.
  • How to increase a sense of 'team' within the Board.
  • Why recruiting new Board members is a critical task for the leadership of the business.
  • The one mistake most Boards make that cripples the effectiveness of the Board.
We will consider three types of Boards:
  • For-profit governing
  • For-profit and nonprofit advisory
  • Nonprofit governing

Making B2C Companies Scale: Women Entrepreneurs Weigh In
Starting a consumer focused company (maybe especially true in mobile space) requires far more than technical chops. It takes a brand/marketing/customer engagement focus and the ability to create leveraged partnerships that provide distribution and cost effective outreach. There are a vast array of companies cropping up in as many segments - so how do you stand out and create a viable business? This panel will provide perspectives and advice from a range of women who have founded B2C enterprises. Some say women do this far better since we're in touch with the demographic responsible for driving most purchases in our country in terms of retail, physical goods, and mobile apps. But how do you get investors to believe in your story, how do you compete with the large cadres of large companies competing for talent (e.g. Amazon, Google, Starbucks, Costco, etc.)? What company culture makes employees passionate about what your firm does?

Is the university system the most effective path for cultivating startup communities?

In what ways is it ideal, and in what ways it is insufficient?

We've seen a rise in alternative education options, such as skills-based training, workshops, MOOCs, immersive programs, and so forth. Are these options poised to challenge the university status quo, or do they have another destiny?

There are those who would challenge the entire formalized education system altogether, given the availability of information, the success of many entrepreneurs who opted not to complete their degrees, and the rising costs of tuition. When is it really okay to "drop out"?

In this panel, we’re going to cover these questions and possibly more, time permitting.

Who should attend?
Great for anyone interested in a critical discussion on the role of higher education in cultivating a thriving business community.
